TBR|February 2018

Hey Bibliomanics,

Happy February!! I hope you are starting this month refreshed and motivated. This month I decided due to burying my head in textbooks, digging large holes and hiding in them away from the madness that is school. I would set a few reading goals.

My TBR pile has 3 books on it.  Who am I even kidding? This month’s TBR, is showcasing 3 of the books that I plan for sure reading this month. I am keeping my TBR’s smaller this year because I want to be able to accomplish more by setting goals as I go. Already I have strayed away from the books featured in this video.

I picked up “The house on Mango Street” last night from the library and I plan to be reading it on the go because the chapters are so short.

The other 3 books I would like to read this month are:

IT By Stephen King, I know what you are thinking. “Marina, weren’t you reading this in 2017?” Why, yes I was. I am continuing on with the journey and absolutely enjoying it. It is just not a book I prefer to read on the go, as I really like getting into the story and feeling like I am part of the story rather than just reading it on the go.

13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher I mainly want to read this because of the NETFLIX series. I want to watch the series, but I try not to watch film adaptions until after I read the book with the exceptions of “Game of Thrones”, “IT”, and “Outlander”. I got “13 Reasons Why”, on audio and hope to be able to listen to it this month.

And last but not least, is Gemina by Amiee Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. This is the sequel to the space opera Illuminae. I read Illuminae, last month and although I enjoyed the ending I didn’t care too much for the entire story. I am giving it another try this month. I was thinking of listening to the audio book for this as well. But, due to the format of the book I may just check it out of the library.

There are sooo many books, but where is the time????

October TBR 2017 : ALL THE SPOOKS

Hello Bibliomaniacs,

Its been a minute. Life has been soo busy but soo good all at the same time. But, I wanted to share with you my TBR (TO BE READ) for the month of October 2017.

ITIT By Stephen King: The first thing that I am focusing on is the book IT by Stephen King. So, far I am enjoying it but its very long and I feel like I have not been devoting enough time to it.

Where the Road Takes Me By Jay McLean: I am currently reading this asWhere the road takes me an E-book during my cardio at the gym. I have been really enjoying it. It is a young adult romance novel. There seems to be a mix of mystery too this book.

talking as fast as I can Talking As Fast as I Can By Lauren Graham: I already finished this book. I listened to this as an audiobook and it was fabulous. It was like being back in Stars Hollow. Lauren Graham does a great  job narrating her novel. I think it really gives an inside glimpse into the filming life of Gilmore Girls.

The Girl with the dragon tatoo

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo By Stieg Larson: This is reread for me. I would love to finish this series. But, it has been a few years since I have read this book. I am listening to this as an audiobook. This is one of my favorite thrillers, and I recommend this book to everyone I meet. I can’t wait to continue on with this series.

Bird Box By Josh Malarian: Honestly, I don’t know much about this book other than it is Bird Boxsupposed to be really creepy and perfect for Halloween. I have been really into thrillers and horror stories.

Walking Dead VOl 4The Walking Dead Vol 4: The Hearts Desire: Slowlybut surely I am making my way through ” The Walking Dead”, series. I have been really enjoying these graphic novels because they read like the TV show.

YOU By Caroline Kepnes: I know very little about this book. I put it on hold from the library so

YOU we will see when it comes in. This is if I’m not mistaken a story told from a male point of view who stalks a girl.I heard a lot of good things about this book. I’m very excited to read this one and add to my creepy feels this month.Dracula

Dracula: Lastly, I would love to listen to the audiobook of Dracula. This book is narrated by Tim Curry who played the clown in the original IT movie. This is a dark gothic read and I can’t wait to get into it.

This month is overly ambitious. I don’t think I will be able to get through everything that I want to read but, the top priorities are IT, YOU and The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo. What creepy, scary books are you reading this month? Or have you skipped October and already are ready for Harry X-mas to you?

Top 5 Books I want to Read in 2017| Yearly TBR

fullsizerender-2

Happy New Years my blogger friends,

As one of my New Years resolutions is to post at least one blog post a week, I decided why not start now?

So without further or due, I present to you my “Top 5 Books I want to Read in 2017”.

These are books I hope to get through this year. Although, there are only 5, I hope to read more than this. This year I decided to set my goodreads challenge to 1 book. Mainly, because I don’t want the pressure of having to read a certain amount of books. Secondly, I want to be able to read thick books without feeling like I am taking too long to read them, and lastly I want to find my love for reading again.

Coming in at Number 5: Tender is the Night by F.Scott Fitzgeraldtender-is-the-night

Synopsis: Set on the French Riviera in the late 1920s, Tender
Is the Night
is the tragic romance of the young actress Rosemary Hoyt and the stylish American couple Dick and Nicole Diver. A brilliant young psychiatrist at the time of his marriage, Dick is both husband and doctor to Nicole, whose wealth goads him into a lifestyle not his own, and whose growing strength highlights Dick’s harrowing demise. A profound study of the romantic concept of character, Tender Is the Night is lyrical, expansive, and hauntingly evocative. (Goodreads)

modern-romanceNumber 4: Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari

Synopsis:

Now a New York Times Bestseller

A hilarious, thoughtful, and in-depth exploration of the pleasures and perils of modern romance from one of this generation’s sharpest comedic voices

At some point, every one of us embarks on a journey to find love. We meet people, date, get into and out of relationships, all with the hope of finding someone with whom we share a deep connection. This seems standard now, but it’s wildly different from what people did even just decades ago. Single people today have more romantic options than at any point in human history. With technology, our abilities to connect with and sort through these options are staggering. So why are so many people frustrated?

Some of our problems are unique to our time. “Why did this guy just text me an emoji of a pizza?” “Should I go out with this girl even though she listed Combos as one of her favorite snack foods? Combos?!” “My girlfriend just got a message from some dude named Nathan. Who’s Nathan? Did he just send her a photo of his penis? Should I check just to be sure?”

But the transformation of our romantic lives can’t be explained by technology alone. In a short period of time, the whole culture of finding love has changed dramatically. A few decades ago, people would find a decent person who lived in their neighborhood. Their families would meet and, after deciding neither party seemed like a murderer, they would get married and soon have a kid, all by the time they were twenty-four. Today, people marry later than ever and spend years of their lives on a quest to find the perfect person, a soul mate.

For years, Aziz Ansari has been aiming his comic insight at modern romance, but for Modern Romance, the book, he decided he needed to take things to another level. He teamed up with NYU sociologist Eric Klinenberg and designed a massive research project, including hundreds of interviews and focus groups conducted everywhere from Tokyo to Buenos Aires to Wichita. They analyzed behavioral data and surveys and created their own online research forum on Reddit, which drew thousands of messages. They enlisted the world’s leading social scientists, including Andrew Cherlin, Eli Finkel, Helen Fisher, Sheena Iyengar, Barry Schwartz, Sherry Turkle, and Robb Willer. The result is unlike any social science or humor book we’ve seen before.
In Modern Romance, Ansari combines his irreverent humor with cutting-edge social science to give us an unforgettable tour of our new romantic world.

Number 3: Eating Animals by Jonathon Safron Foer

eating-animalsSynopsis: Jonathan Safran Foer spent much of his teenage and college years oscillating between carnivore and vegetarian. As he became a husband and a father, he kept returning to two questions: Why do we eat animals? And would we eat them if we knew how they got on our dinner plates?Brilliantly synthesizing philosophy, literature, science, and his own undercover detective work, Eating Animals explores the many fictions we use to justify our eating habits-from folklore to pop culture to family traditions and national myth-and how such tales justify a brutal ignorance. Marked by Foer’s profound moral ferocity and unvarying generosity, as well as the vibrant style and creativity that made his previous books, Everything is Illuminated and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, huge bestsellers, Eating Animals is a celebration and a reckoning, a story about the stories we’ve told–and the stories we now need to tell.(Goodreads)

Number 2: House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewskihouse-of-leaves

Synopsis: A blind old man, a young apprentice working in a tattoo shop, and a mad woman haunting an Ohio institute narrate this story of a family that encounters an endlessly shifting series of hallways in their new home, eventually coming face to face with the awful darkness lying at its heart.(Goodreads)

a-clash-of-kingsNumber 1: Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin

Synopsis:
Time is out of joint. The summer of peace and plenty, ten years long, is drawing to a close, and the harsh, chill winter approaches like an angry beast. Two great leaders—Lord Eddard Stark and Robert Baratheon—who held sway over an age of enforced peace are dead…victims of royal treachery. Now, from the ancient citadel of Dragonstone to the forbidding shores of Winterfell, chaos reigns, as pretenders to the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms prepare to stake their claims through tempest, turmoil, and war.

As a prophecy of doom cuts across the sky—a comet the color of blood and flame—six factions struggle for control of a divided land. Eddard’s son Robb has declared himself King in the North. In the south, Joffrey, the heir apparent, rules in name only, victim of the scheming courtiers who teem over King’s Landing. Robert’s two brothers each seek their own dominion, while a disfavored house turns once more to conquest. And a continent away, an exiled queen, the Mother of Dragons, risks everything to lead her precious brood across a hard hot desert to win back the crown that is rightfully hers.

A Clash of Kings transports us into a magnificent, forgotten land of revelry and revenge, wizardry and wartime. It is a tale in which maidens cavort with madmen, brother plots against brother, and the dead rise to walk in the night. Here a princess masquerades as an orphan boy; a knight of the mind prepares a poison for a treacherous sorceress; and wild men descend from the Mountains of the Moon to ravage the countryside.

Against a backdrop of incest and fratricide, alchemy and murder, the price of glory may be measured in blood. And the spoils of victory may just go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel…and the coldest hearts. For when rulers clash, all of the land feels the tremors.

Audacious, inventive, brilliantly imagined, A Clash of Kings is a novel of dazzling beauty and boundless enchantment;a tale of pure excitement you will never forget. (Goodreads)

October 2016: To Be Read

So, there has be a lot of “I am writing” post so lets switch this up a bit.

Here is the plan for October. Its not going to at all ambitious.(Did you get the pun?— Gone with the wind is over 1,000 pages)Lady Midnight

But, before I jump into that. A quick reading up date, I am about 2 chapters away from finish “Lady Midnight”. There will be a review on it posted some time this week so look out for it.

I really only plan on making progress in one book which is:

Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell

Margaret Mitchgone-with-the-windell’s epic novel of love and war won the Pulitzer Prize and one of the most popular and celebrated movies of all time.

Many novels have been written about the Civil War and its aftermath. None take us into the burning fields and cities of the American South as Gone With the Wind does, creating haunting scenes and thrilling portraits of characters so vivid that we remember their words and feel their fear and hunger for the rest of our lives.

In the two main characters, the white-shouldered, irresistible Scarlett and the flashy, contemptuous Rhett, Margaret Mitchell not only conveyed a timeless story of survival under the harshest of circumstances, she also created two of the most famous lovers in the English-speaking world since Romeo and Juliet. (Goodreads)

If time permits and I need a little break from “Gone with the Wind”, I also plan on finishing ” The Bane Chronicles”.  I started this book during the summer and never got around to finishing it.

The Bane Chronicles by Cassandra Clare

the-bane-chroniclesFans of The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices can get to know warlock Magnus Bane like never before in this collection of New York Times bestselling tales, in print for the first time with an exclusive new story and illustrated material.

This collection of eleven short stories illuminates the life of the enigmatic Magnus Bane, whose alluring personality, flamboyant style, and sharp wit populate the pages of the #1 New York Times bestselling series, The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices.

Originally released one-by-one as e-only short stories by Cassandra Clare, Maureen Johnson, and Sarah Rees Brennan, this compilation presents all ten together in print for the first time and includes a never-before-seen eleventh tale, as well as new illustrated material. (Goodreads)

Thoughts:

I am a little nervous about reading “Gone with the Wind” because it is over  a thousand pages. But, one page at a time should do it.

I may pick up some spooky reads around Halloween, but I will see how the reading goes this month and pick them up by mood.

Until Next time with warm cups of tea and just a few more chapters,

Rina

December TBR

Hello Bibliomanics,

The time of the month is upon us again, what will you be reading this month?

Currently, I am finishing up the last of my finals. And about to go on a holiday break at work. I bet, you can see where this is going… Yes, the yearly challenge of meeting your TBR goal. At the beginning of this year my goal was to read 40 books by the end of 2015. The current progress is: I am at 36 books so far. That means within the month of December, to meet my goal I need to read 4 books.  Should be easy right?

So, here is this month’s to be read pile:

Coming in at #1:

The Choice By Nicholas Sparks (Currently Reading)

Travis Parker has everything a man could want: a good job, loy531350al friends, even a waterfront home in small-town North Carolina. In full pursuit of the good life — boating, swimming, and regular barbecues with his good-natured buddies — he holds the vague conviction that a serious relationship with a woman would only cramp his style. That is, until Gabby Holland moves in next door. Despite his attempts to be neighborly, the appealing redhead seems to have a chip on her shoulder about him…and the presence of her longtime boyfriend doesn’t help. Despite himself, Travis can’t stop trying to ingratiate himself with his new neighbor, and his persistent efforts lead them both to the doorstep of a journey that neither could have foreseen. Spanning the eventful years of young love, marriage and family, The Choice ultimately confronts us with the most heartwrenching question of all: how far would you go to keep the hope of love alive?

And of course during this beloved holiday season, the book tube/ blogging community holds the annual Harry X-mas. Haven’t heard of it? This is where we book lovers, read either one or all the books of Harry Potter in the month of December and try to watch the movies. Last year, I read the “Sorcerers Stone”, and the “Chamber of Secrets”, that means I will be continuing on with the series.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.k. Rowling

Harry Potter 5is lucky to reach the age of thirteen, since he has already survived the murderous attacks of the feared Dark Lord on more than one occasion. But his hopes for a quiet term concentrating on Quidditch are dashed when a maniacal mass-murderer escapes from Azkaban, pursued by the soul-sucking Dementors who guard the prison. It’s assumed that Hogwarts is the safest place for Harry to be. But is it a coincidence that he can feel eyes watching him in the dark, and should he be taking Professor Trelawney’s ghoulish predictions seriously?

Recently, I watched 50 shades of Grey on HBO GO. I was a huge fan of the books and the movie made me want to read the story from Christian’s point of view.I’m sure you can guess what book is next on the pile.

Grey by E L James

See the world of Fifty Shades of Grey anew through the eyes of Christian Grey.

In Christian’s own words, and through his thoughts, reflections, and dreams, E L James offers a fresh perspective on the love story that has enthralled millions of readers around the world.

Christian Grey exercises control in all things; his world is neat, disciplined, and utterly empty—until the day that Anastasia Steele falls into his offiGREYce, in a tangle of shapely limbs and tumbling brown hair. He tries to forget her, but instead is swept up in a storm of emotion he cannot comprehend and cannot resist. Unlike any woman he has known before, shy, unworldly Ana seems to see right through him—past the business prodigy and the penthouse lifestyle to Christian’s cold, wounded heart.

Will being with Ana dispel the horrors of his childhood that haunt Christian every night? Or will his dark sexual desires, his compulsion to control, and the self-loathing that fills his soul drive this girl away and destroy the fragile hope she offers him?

This book is intended for mature audiences.

My True Love Gave To Me

Whether you enjoy celebrating Christmas or Hanukkah, Winter Solstice or New Year’s there’s something here for everyone. So curl up by the fireplace and get cozy. You have twelve reasons this season to stay indoors and fall in love.

Devil’s Game by Joanna Wylde

Liam “Hunter” Blake hates the Reapers MC. Born and raised a Devil’s Jack, he knows his duty. He’ll defend his club from their oldest enemies-the Reaper18693621s-using whatever weapons he can find. But why use force when the Reapers’ president has a daughter who’s alone and vulnerable? Hunter has wanted her from the minute he saw her, and now he has an excuse to take her.

Em has lived her entire life in the shadow of the Reapers. Her overprotective father, Picnic, is the club’s president. The last time she had a boyfriend, Picnic shot him. Now the men in her life are far more interested in
keeping her daddy happy than showing her a good time. Then she meets a handsome stranger-a man who isn’t afraid to treat her like a real woman. One who isn’t afraid of her father. His name is Liam, and he’s The One.

These are a few of the books I would like to get through in the month of December. I also want to read more about a vegan diet, one of my favorite you tubers “High Carb Hannah”  @(https://www.youtube.com/user/Rawkaholics), and her boyfriend came out with 3 vegan cook books, called #Fully Cooked, #I like it raw and #RawUntilWhenever.I hope to be checking those out and trying out some yummy recipes.

So here it is the last TBR of the year. Stay tuned for future reviews.
